How to apply

Details of how to apply for a CHASE studentship for entry in 2020-21 will be announced in October 2019. In the meantime details about the last recruitment round are provided below for you to refer to.

If you would like to be notified when instructions for Birkbeck CHASE applicants are made available, please email the l and we will let you know when this is announced.

Last year's application process required two steps: an application to an MPhil/PhD programme and a funding application.

Step 1 (2019-20 entry). Applying for an MPhil/PhD programme

  • You will find advice on how to apply for the PhD programme, including finding a supervisor and writing a research proposal, on our online programme page. You must submit your PhD application as soon as possible (closing dates below), in order to be considered in our CHASE selection process (see the next step).
  • Selection at all stages will be informed by entry criteria and research proposal requirements described in CHASE guidance for applicants, so you should know about these requirements before you submit your PhD application.

Step 2 (2019-20 entry). Applying for Chase funding

  • CHASE DTP studentships are awarded on a competitive basis. You should only complete the online CHASE application form if we've invited you to do so.
  • Selection process at Birkbeck: We will nominate up to 22 candidates to be considered by CHASE for funding. To select these candidates, we will follow this selection process:
    • Stage 1: Departments will assess the PhD applications they have received and will identify the strongest candidates to be put forward for consideration by their Schools (all departments belong to Schools).
    • Stage 2: Each School will assess the candidates identified at Stage 1 and will agree on a list of the strongest applications.
    • Stage 3: A College panel will then meet to consider the lists submitted by the Schools and will identify the strongest 22 applications from across the College. These applicants will be nominated by Birkbeck to be put forward as applicants for CHASE funding.
  • Please note: Only Birkbeck applicants who are identified at Stage 3 will be required to submit the online CHASE application form. (You can prepare relevant information by viewing our Word version of the application form.) If you are selected at Stage 3, we will provide you with the access details you need to complete the CHASE online form.
  • Guidance notes for applicants are also available on the CHASE website providing details of what must be included in your application and the selection criteria for CHASE applicants; it is essential that you read these guidelines.
