How did you find out about Birkbeck Talent?
It was through a Google search. We had a few vacancies and so approached a number of universities. Birkbeck Talent were the most responsive – they made the whole process of recruiting students and graduates very straightforward.
What happened next?
The Birkbeck Talent team were great at working with us as an employer. They really want to get under the skin of the company! The team got back to us quickly with a shortlist of candidates who were very impressive and really fitted the role. It was great to have a service that made it so easy to recruit talented students.
How useful was Birkbeck Talent in helping you to get the right candidate for this position?
Phenomenally useful! The support that the recruitment team gave was great. We’ve had an incredibly high calibre of Birkbeck students joining us to do paid internships in the business – five altogether. One of our interns, Chloe, started off on a 6-month contract, and is now a permanent, integral member of the team.
What do you find attractive about Birkbeck students?
In my experience, Birkbeck students tend to be more mature, with a better work ethic. Trying to combine both work and study requires a different level of focus, and so Birkbeck students tend to be extremely driven. They also typically have at least one degree, and some work experience - they have already developed a great range of skills that they can bring to the business.
As a company, we prefer to offer paid internships full-time, to ensure continuity in the role. As Birkbeck students all study in the evening, they have no issue with working full-time hours.
Would you recommend Birkbeck Talent to other employers?
Categorically yes. I’ve really enjoyed working with Birkbeck Talent. It’s a wonderful service – considering both the quality of candidates and the level of engagement with business.
What are the benefits of working at The East India Company? Why should students/alumni apply for your roles?
We’re a young entrepreneurial business managing an amazing brand, which is growing with great ambition. We offer roles that can be quite varied, and will expose students to a range of different experiences. We’re also quite unique as a brand, and so above all look for students who are enthusiastic and eager to be part of our development.
