Clearing 2016: evening path to a degree proves popular
The opportunity to gain a University of London undergraduate degree in three years, whilst working in the day, is proving a popular alternative route to higher education.

Birkbeck's Clearing hotline - 0207 631 6316 - is open at the following times:
- Monday to Thursday: 10:00 to 18:00
- Friday: 10:00 to 17:00
- Saturday and Sunday: closed
The opportunity to gain a University of London undergraduate degree in three years, whilst working in the day, is proving a popular alternative route to higher education at Birkbeck.
This approach enables students to get ahead in their career while studying in the evening. They still get a degree in the three years, the same time it traditionally takes students if they are taught during the day.
It is a style of study that has proved increasingly popular with clearing applicants since Birkbeck introduced full-time, three-year degrees, taught in the evening, in 2009.
Jonah Duffin, Director of External Relations at Birkbeck, explains why:
“Increasingly applicants are looking at how their whole university experience will benefit their career plans. Students appreciate what Birkbeck offers –high quality University of London degrees, taught full-time in the evening –freeing up the daytime to gain meaningful work experience.
“Being in London means lots of opportunities for working in their chosen area and we have an in-house recruitment agency that helps students build their workplace skills and helps find them a suitable, paid job to complement their studies.”
The evening route to a degree is not only popular with school-leavers, but with those who missed out on university the first time round.
Mr Duffin explains: “Another group we see coming through Clearing are working people who never experienced university straight from school. Now they want to boost their career or change direction by getting a degree.
“Evening study enables them to earn and learn at the same time: combining both can be really attractive for people who want to study and already have commitments like a mortgage or a family.”
Anyone wanting to apply to start one of Birkbeck’s undergraduate, full-time three-year evening degree courses this October – both school leavers and mature students – can phone Birkbeck’s clearing hotline (0207 631 6316) to speak with members of Birkbeck admissions and academic staff.
They will be able to find out about their eligibility to join more than 60 courses with spaces available through clearing which are due to commence in October 2016.
Further information, including a full list of Birkbeck courses with places available through clearing, can be found at www.bbk.ac.uk/clearing
Please note, the university is closed for the bank holiday on Monday 29 August. Prospective students applying through Clearing should fill out our enquiry form online.
