One World Festival

The One World Festival is a programme of free events to celebrate Birkbeck's diverse, international culture, as represented by its students, staff, alumni and the local community. 

2018 Programme

Attendees participated in a range of events, including: 

  • a Bloomsbury walking tour 
  • a potluck picnic in Gordon Square 
  • tea in Birkbeck Library 
  • a theatre performance 
  • the launch of a special edition of the Students' Union magazine, Lamp and Owl 
  • a performance of a specially commissioned piece of music, Around the World in 45 Minutesby the string quartet, The Dionysus Assemble. 

Public lectures were given by academics and researchers from the School of Science: 

  • Dr Simon Drake and Dr Andy Beard, Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, shared their remarkable discovery of meteorite impact fragments on the Isle of Skye in December 2017. 
  • Members of the ISMB-Mycobacteria Research Laboratory, ISMB, Department of Biological Sciences, led a public workshop, 'Global Health and Disease: Together We Can Tackle Drug Resistance in Superbugs'. 
  • Academics from the Department of Psychological Sciences presented their research, showing how early interventions in infant brain development can help all children reach their potential.
