One World Festival
The One World Festival is a programme of free events to celebrate Birkbeck's diverse, international culture, as represented by its students, staff, alumni and the local community.
2018 Programme
Attendees participated in a range of events, including:
- a Bloomsbury walking tour
- a potluck picnic in Gordon Square
- tea in Birkbeck Library
- a theatre performance
- the launch of a special edition of the Students' Union magazine, Lamp and Owl
- a performance of a specially commissioned piece of music, Around the World in 45 Minutes, by the string quartet, The Dionysus Assemble.
Public lectures were given by academics and researchers from the School of Science:
- Dr Simon Drake and Dr Andy Beard, Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, shared their remarkable discovery of meteorite impact fragments on the Isle of Skye in December 2017.
- Members of the ISMB-Mycobacteria Research Laboratory, ISMB, Department of Biological Sciences, led a public workshop, 'Global Health and Disease: Together We Can Tackle Drug Resistance in Superbugs'.
- Academics from the Department of Psychological Sciences presented their research, showing how early interventions in infant brain development can help all children reach their potential.
